About the Author

Elise Buitendag began her career as a botanical officer at the Botanical Research Institute in Pretoria (1962–1964). She later served as a botanist at the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, where she played a pivotal role in its development. Beyond her national contributions, Buitendag represented South Africa for 21 years at the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), earning multiple accolades for her leadership.
