The Story Behind the Book

Genesis of a Garden by Elise Buitendag is more than a coffee-table book—it’s a heartfelt chronicle of the early years (1969–1981) of the Lowveld National Botanical Garden in Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit). The Story Behind the Book

Initially conceived as a means to document her extensive collection of botanical artworks—many of which lacked photographic records—Buitendag’s project evolved into a comprehensive narrative. Encouraged by peers to share the garden’s origin story, she intertwined her illustrations with anecdotes, capturing the challenges and triumphs of establishing the garden in a rugged landscape.

A Fusion of Art and Science

Buitendag’s dual expertise as a botanist and artist shines throughout the book. Her illustrations, spanning over five decades, depict South Africa’s rich flora with precision and artistry. From delicate watercolors of Ceropegia species to vibrant oil paintings of Pterocarpus angolensis (Kiaat), each piece reflects her deep connection to the plant world.
